In line with the current developments and needs of the Muslim community, the Division of Islamic Affairs (BAHEIS) has been restructured. On October 2, 1996, the Cabinet Meeting had agreed with BAHEIS that the Prime Minister's Department was upgraded to a department with effect from 1 January 1997 under the name of Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim).

Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan

On September 1, 1979 again Kuantan Municipal Council was upgraded to the Kuantan Municipal Council based on the Local Government Act (Act 171) which remains to this day. The Kuantan Municipal Council's administrative area was expanded to 324 sq km covering four Mukim namely Kuala Kuantan, Ulu Kuantan, Beserah and Karang River.
