Shah Alam was opened in 1963 aimed at being the center of Selangor administration after Kuala Lumpur was made the Federal Territory on 1 February 1974. On 7 December 1978 on the consent of DYMM Sultan of Selangor, 8th, the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al - Haj, Shah Alam was declared the the capital of Selangor with a total area of 41.69 sq km. Since then Shah Alam has continued to experience several area extension processes and the last is on January 1, 1997. Through the News Plan 1190, Shah Alam expanded to 290.3 sq km.
