Established in 1929, FRIM, formerly known as the Forest Research Institute, becomes a full statutory body, administered by the Forest Research and Development Authority of Malaysia (MFRDB) under the Ministry of Primary Industries in 1985. Since 2003, MFRDB and FRIM have been transferred under the authority of the Ministry of Resources Natural and Environmental (NRE). Beginning October 1, 2016, the FRIM Act was enacted and the MFRDB was replaced by members of the Institute with four additional representatives from the corporate sector to assist in commercialization efforts. On July 2, 2018, the NRE was restructured to become the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources (KATS) while on March 9, 2020, KATS was reorganized as the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (KeTSA)

After almost 13 years PERDA has been placed under the supervision of the Prime Minister's Department of Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU), on October 19, 2018 PERDA transferred to the Ministry of Rural Development (KPLB).
